The Diet Connection: FODMAPs and Prebiotic Intolerance

Diet is one of the most significant triggers of post-meal gas and bloating — and the timing and severity of your symptoms often depends on both the size of your meal and what you ate.

FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) are a category of carbohydrates found in many everyday foods — from onions and garlic to wheat, apples, and beans. For people with sensitive guts, FODMAPs are rapidly fermented by gut bacteria, which generates gas, alters the gut's pH and osmotic balance, disrupts the microbiome, and can trigger pain, bloating, and accelerated or erratic transit.

Prebiotics and dietary fiber follow a similar pathway. While these are genuinely healthy for many people, those with functional GI disorders often find them problematic — not because fiber is bad, but because their gut isn't currently in a state to process it well.

SIBO: When Bacteria End Up in the Wrong Place

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when bacteria — normally kept in check in the large intestine — migrate into the small intestine and set up residence where they don't belong.

Under healthy conditions, your body has multiple defenses against this: stomach acid, immune proteins (IgA), digestive enzymes, bile, and the ileocecal valve all work together to prevent anaerobic bacteria from colonizing the small bowel. When these defenses are compromised, SIBO can take hold — and the bacterial fermentation that follows produces significant hydrogen and methane gas directly in the small intestine, where it causes the most disruption.
