Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)

What Is It?

Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped bacterium that colonizes the lining of the stomach. Unlike most bacteria, H. pylori has evolved to survive in the stomach’s highly acidic environment — it does so by producing an enzyme called urease, which neutralizes stomach acid and creates a protective buffer around itself. This allows it to burrow into the stomach lining, cause chronic inflammation, and persist for decades if left untreated.

H. pylori is directly linked to peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis, and — with long-term infection — significantly elevated risk of gastric cancer. It is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization.

What Are the Symptoms?

This is where H. pylori becomes particularly tricky: many people have no symptoms at all. The infection can be entirely silent for years while quietly damaging the stomach lining. When symptoms do appear, they often include:

Clostridioides difficile (C. diff)

What Is It?

Clostridioides difficile — commonly called C. diff — is a spore-forming bacterium that produces toxins capable of severely damaging the colon lining. It is responsible for approximately 500,000 infections per year in the United States and contributes to an estimated 30,000 deaths annually, making it one of the most serious gastrointestinal infections in the country.

How Does It Develop?

C. diff thrives when the normal gut microbiome has been disrupted — most commonly by antibiotic use. Antibiotics, while sometimes necessary, are indiscriminate: they kill harmful bacteria but also wipe out the protective bacteria that keep C. diff from proliferating. When that protective ecosystem is depleted, C. diff seizes the opportunity and rapidly overgrows, releasing toxins that trigger intense inflammation of the colon.

This is why C. diff is so often a consequence of medical treatment itself — and why microbiome restoration is essential after any course of antibiotics.
